Colin Coffey, LMT

My name is Colin Coffey, owner and Licensed Massage Therapist. I am here to encourage you to consider the health benefits (mental and physical) of regular, professional, massage therapy and to say "Now is the time to book my treatment(s) and to see if regular massage therapy will help me start feeling better."

The benefits of massage therapy

Too much stress is recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a negative impact on your health – you don’t need a medical degree to know that though. As a Licensed Massage Therapist by the State of New York I can work with you (where medically appropriate) to help to reduce stress and improve muscle tone and function using scientifically developed massage techniques.

About Colin

Born north of London in England to working-class immigrant Irish parents, he was the first in his family to attend university (receiving a BA History from the University of Sussex in 1987) and then the first in his family to receive a Masters degree in Business Administration, this time from the University of Houston, Texas in in 1996. Colin received a full scholarship for his undergraduate degree and self-funded his graduate studies in Texas. He moved to Rochester, NY 7 years ago. After a 12 year corporate career in the US he decided to retrain and set up his own business as a NYS Licensed Massage Therapist. He is co-owner of South Wedge Wellness LLC.

In addition, Colin has

  • Received regular massage therapy for 26 years in five different countries and eight US states - he knows something about massage outside New York and the US.
  • Provided licensed massage therapy for close to 5 years at 728 South Avenue, in the South Wedge - he doesn't jump around.
  • Financially supports LGBT community organizations and local South Wedge business and community organizations through donations of massage and legitimate print advertising in the Wedge Newspaper, Business Association of the South Wedge BASWA South Wedge Quarterly Magazine, The Empty Closet Newspaper (GAGV), and The City Newspaper (no Groupons or phoney deals with "recommendations" from companies I pay to say I'm good - yep that's what they are doing)
  • Lives in the South Wedge with his husband and partner of 11 years Michael who teaches in the Rochester City School District
  • Banks at our Credit Union (Genesse Federal Co-op)
  • Advocates for open access for all communities to massage therapy – "health insurance should cover massage therapy period"
  • Graduated from the Onondaga School of Therapeutic Massage in June 2008
  • ASL friendly - Colin completed Level 1 ASL for Medical Professionals at the University of Rochester Deaf Wellness Center. His ASL proficiency is limited but functional. Renewing-Massage is a positive and affirming place, we support Deaf Community and identity.
  • LGBT - Colin has been out for 26 years and believes passionately in supporting equality for LGBTQI people. "I believe professional massage therapy can be especially beneficial for LGBT people in terms of providing therapeutic non-sexual touch and the positive effects this can have on reducing stress. Stress caused by homo/transphobic family, friends, co-workers and secular and religious institutions can be a significant causal factor for negative health outcomes for LGBT people. Reducing stress is an important benefit massage therapy can bring to LGBT people.
